Chapter Ten

I Shouldn’t Be Surprised; He Is The Riddle Man, Afterall.

I heard the yelling as soon as I opened the bedroom door. It was Nina and a couple of men going back and forth. Curious as usual, I hobbled down the stairs, attempting to conceal the limp. The wound had healed, and the pain had lessened, but my entire thigh was one big bruise. Though I had to hand it to the werewolves, they healed quicker than I thought. I honestly didn’t believe Raul at first. In just over three hours, I was fit enough to walk. At least this life came with lifetime health care.

“We don’t have any other option, Nina. They can tell us what is happening in Ann Arbor.” Mark said coldly. I leaned against the kitchen’s entryway and watched the ongoing show.

Nina pinched the bridge of her nose. “Mark, we can’t go. You know how unpredictable they are. We are three members down, and that's not enough to protect ourselves. It’d be a suicide mission if they attack. They can do a lot worse than kill us.” Nina stressed to Mark. “My answer is no.”

Mark searched the crowded kitchen, looking for support. His eyes landed on me, then lighted up like a Christmas tree. His eyes snapped back to Nina. “We can use the new girl. Bre is a natural. Plus, it’ll even our numbers.” Mark pleaded to Nina.

I stepped forward. “Excuse me,” I said, “Mark, refrain yourself from volunteering me for something without asking me first. Nina only asked me to protect this house if it was under attack. No one mentioned a suicide mission.” I hadn’t seen Raul when I entered, but I could smell him now, too close for comfort.

Nina glanced at me, then smirked at Mark, “The lady doesn’t wish to join our games. And we’d still be down a team.”

Mark sagged against the counter, “Nina, we’ve spent so much time on this mission. We can’t even get the information we want. We have to use this chance to check on Stubbe. We can’t waste this opportunity.”

“I know, and I wish we could. Even if we had an extra team to spare, Stubbe’s not here. The witches seldom respect anyone under their leaders to step in place for them. I’ve tried to step in for Stubbe before, and you know how that ended. I have to think about the pack first, and Stubbe wouldn’t want us to go through with this without him. He knows it's dangerous. He will understand and respect our decision.”

Raul stepped forward, scooting around me. “I can be the alpha for tonight.”

Nina whipped around and glared at Raul. “You do not lead us, Raul.” She growled.

“Oh, come now. Stubbe trusted me. After everything Stubbe has done for me, the least I can do is step in and help his pack through their hardships. I’m not underling the witches might accept me. Nina, please let me help.” Raul pleaded. I wasn’t impressed, but Nina’s expression shifted.

Nina scoffed, then started to pace.
